That Means:
Tackling key issues like...
Giving more representation and attention to subsistence communities – and making sure they have seats at the table when we are making decisions.
Fighting against the factory trawler operations that are dumping millions of metric tons of fish every year.
Reauthorizing the Magnuson–Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
That's Why:
Mary has done just that...
Mary has built a bipartisan coalition in DC to protect our salmon runs from foreign trawlers.
Mary cosponsored the Don Young Restoration Grants for Coastlines and Fisheries Act, which will establish a grant program for communities across our state with the goal of protecting our waterways and marine habitats.
Mary has cosponsored bills directly aimed at combatting the impacts of climate change on our fisheries.
Mary introduced the Bycatch Reduction and Mitigation Act, which will reduce bycatch in Alaska waters by investing millions of dollars over five years into the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Bycatch Reduction and Engineering Program and establishing the Bycatch Mitigation Assistance Fund to help fishermen and vessel owners purchase new, more bycatch-friendly gear.
Mary introduced the Bottom Trawl Clarity Act, which will reduce bottom trawling in Alaska waters by better defining key terms surrounding how bottom trawling is categorized and requiring the designation of Bottom Trawl Zones to limit the areas where gear that scrapes the seafloor is allowed.
Mary has worked to revise the Magnuson–Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act since her first day in Washington.
Mary worked tirelessly to achieve a major milestone in pro-fish policymaking securing a ban on predatory foreign trawlers poaching our fish, discarding millions of pounds of bycatch, and destroying our ecosystems.
Mary introduced the FISH Act to create a Fisheries and Ecological Resilience program to help increase fisheries resilience and mandate a study on U.S. seafood competitiveness in international markets (as well as a separate study to assess federal programs that support domestic seafood production). This legislation will modernize Alaska fisheries and upgrade our fishery health for future generations.
