“Our future depends on fixing the rigged system in DC that’s hurting Alaska while politicians feather their own nest. DC people will be pissed that I’m focusing on their self-dealing, and sharing what I’ve seen firsthand – but systemic change is the only way to bring down grocery costs, reduce bycatch and ban factory trawling, lower energy prices, and build new housing Alaskans can afford…”
Mary knows that the only way to make DC work for Alaska is to get special interests out of our politics. When members of Congress look out for their own self interests and billionaire backers, Alaskans lose. That’s why, with the help of Alaskans, Mary will hold Congress accountable to the people and put real consequences on any politician that wants to sell out our state – regardless of party.
HERE'S HOW WE FIX IT:
Term Limits
Ted Stevens and Don Young were true statesmen – and when they were in office, we could count on them to work together to get stuff done for Alaskans.
Sadly, now the halls of Congress are filled with self-serving politicians who cozy up to special interests like trawlers to line their own pockets.
Mary knows that lifelong politicians corrupted by special interests have no business representing Alaskans, and term limits are the only way to stop it.
- Mary will fight for 12 year term limits in Congress, giving our representatives deadlines to deliver for Alaska.
Shutting Down Self-Enrichment
- For too long, politicians on both sides of the aisle have used their offices to profit off of insider information. Mary will fight against self-dealing and ban members of Congress from stock trading through the bipartisan Restore Trust in Congress Act.
- When members of Congress are elected, they should represent their constituents, not massive corporations or big-money special interests. Mary will fight to pass the Restoring Integrity in Democracy Resolution to check financial conflicts of interest in DC and make Congress answer to the people.
- Alaska representatives should be working on behalf of Alaskans – not to line their pockets or boost their own bottom line. Mary will fight for legislation that requires all members of Congress to completely divest or place their personal assets in a blind trust, ensuring no one is casting votes to get richer.
Answering to Alaska
- Foreign adversaries have no place in American politics, period. Mary will work to pass the Shell Company Abuse Act to crack down on foreign influence in our politics.
- Alaska representatives should answer to Alaskans – and no American politician should be influenced by foreign governments. Mary will fight to ban all federal officials from accepting gifts from any foreign government.
- Alaskans should be deciding Alaska elections, not dark money special interest groups. Alaskans deserve to know who is paying for the ads we see and hear, and by passing the DISCLOSE Act, Mary will fight to bring transparency to our elections so that we know exactly who is funding campaigns and why.
- The Supreme Court Citizens United decision opened the door to millions of dollars flowing into Alaska from dark money special interest groups and flooding our airwaves every election season. Like most Alaskans, Mary’s had enough, and knows that no Lower 48 interest group should be telling us how to vote. Mary will fight to pass a constitutional amendment overturning Citizens United so that we can finally put super PAC spending behind us, and ensure Alaskans are calling the shots on our elections.
Rooting Out DC Waste, Fraud, and Abuse
- Whether it’s bycatch or broken promises from DC insiders, Alaskans can’t stand waste, fraud, or abuse. Mary is on a mission to fix the broken system that benefits special interests so that Alaskans’ taxpayer dollars never go towards wasteful spending or serving corrupt politicians.
Setting the Standard
- Mary believes that members of Congress should be held to the highest ethical standards possible and that nobody should be allowed to use their office to get richer or serve special interests. By fully funding the Office of Congressional Ethics and establishing a new Senate Ethics Office, Mary will work to ensure that no one is off the hook for bad behavior.
Alaskans expect their officials to govern with integrity, and Mary is leading the charge.
