On Thursday, Mary Peltola brought together community leaders and about 150 Alaskans for a rally to fix the rigged system in DC and put Alaska first, issuing a direct request to the Alaska State Legislature to lead the nation and pass 12-year term limits on Alaska’s federal delegation.

“If we want to lower costs and protect our state, we need to root out self-serving DC politicians that are putting special interests before Alaskans.” said Mary Peltola. “Congress has consistently failed to pass term limits, but Alaskans don’t wait on DC to deliver results. Our elected officials need a deadline to deliver, and that’s why I’m calling on the Alaska State Legislature in Juneau to join us in the fight to fix the rigged system.”

If passed by the state legislature and signed into law, Mary’s bold policy proposal would impose 12-year term limits on Alaska’s federal delegation, including a carveout for current officeholders to serve one additional term following enactment. 84% of Alaskans, and 83% of Americans, support term limits on Congress, yet federal legislation has stalled repeatedly.

In addition to calling on the legislature, Mary laid out how the high grocery bills and gas prices squeezing Alaskan families are the result of a rigged system in DC that rewards self-enrichment over service. Speaking to a fired-up crowd, she laid out a straightforward truth: No one from the Lower 48 is coming to save Alaska and DC isn’t going to fix itself, so it’s up to Alaskans to fight back against the system that is keeping prices high and hurting Alaska.

Mary also reiterated her commitment to ban congressional stock trading, get money out of politics, and take on self-dealing politicians in order to lower costs, restore our fisheries, and make Alaska a place of abundance again.
